Earthquake Awareness: Be Prepared, Stay Safe

Earthquake Awareness: Be Prepared, Stay Safe

(Deprem Farkındalığı: Hazırlıklı Ol, Güvende Kal)

Earthquakes are unpredictable (unexpected, sudden / beklenmedik), so it’s essential to prepare (get ready / hazırlanmak) and know (understand / bilmek) how to protect yourself. Here are key steps to help you make a difference (create an impact / fark yaratmak) in staying safe before, during, and after an earthquake.

Before an Earthquake: Plan Ahead

(Depremden Önce: Plan Yapın)

Preparation starts at home. First, take a look (examine, check / bakmak, incelemek) at your surroundings and identify potential dangers (spot risks / olası tehlikeleri belirlemek). Do you have a safe rest area (relaxation space / dinlenme alanı) in case of shaking?

If not, make an effort (try hard / çaba göstermek) to create one. For example, make the bed (arrange the bed / yatağı düzenlemek) a safe spot by removing heavy items like shelves or mirrors above it.

Also, you can do your work (complete your tasks / işini yapmak) to reduce risks by securing (fasten / sabitlemek) furniture to the walls using brackets.

Next, go shopping (buy supplies / alışverişe gitmek) and prepare an emergency kit. This kit should include:

  • Water (to have a drink / bir şeyler içmek)

  • Canned food

  • Flashlight and batteries

  • First aid kit

  • Whistle and blanket

These essentials increase your chance to survive (get an opportunity / hayatta kalma şansı).

Create a family evacuation plan. Take a seat (sit down / oturun) with your family and discuss: where will you go (move / gitmek) when the earthquake hits? Choose a safe meeting point (rendezvous spot / buluşma noktası) such as a park or open field.

Make sure everyone knows how to go home (return home / eve dönmek) after the shaking. A solid plan makes the bed (prepares a safe space / güvenli alan oluşturmak) for the future.

During an Earthquake: Stay Calm and Act Fast

(Deprem Anında: Sakin Kal ve Hızlı Hareket Et)

When the ground shakes, take a break (pause / ara verin) from what you’re doing and remain calm.

  • Indoors? Take a seat (sit down / oturmak) under a sturdy table to protect yourself.

  • Outside? Go early (move quickly / çabuk gitmek) to an open space away from buildings and power lines.

Let me think (allow me to consider / düşüneyim): In a crowded area, don’t go crazy (panic / panik yapmak), just drop to the ground, cover your head, and hold on.

Your goal is to come close (get near / güvenliğe yaklaşmak) to safety by following these protective actions.

After an Earthquake: Assess and Recover

 (Deprem Sonrası: Değerlendir ve Toparlan)

Once the shaking ends, take a look (check / kontrol etmek) at your surroundings. If your home is a mess (disorganized / dağınık), do the dishes (clean up / temizlemek) carefully—especially broken glass.

If you get lost (lose your way / kaybolmak), come first (arrive first / önce gitmek) to the meeting point. Maybe have lunch (eat a meal / yemek yemek) with family to restore your energy.

If someone is injured, get a job done (take responsibility / sorumluluk almak) by giving first aid until help arrives.

Be careful—aftershocks (secondary tremors / artçılar) can come early (happen soon / hemen olabilir) or come last (happen later / geç olabilir). Don’t use elevators, and check gas and power lines before you go home (return home / eve dönmek).

Build Resilience: Stay Ready

(Dayanıklılık Geliştir: Hazır Kal)

To get started (begin / başlamak), do calming activities like doing yoga (practice yoga / yoga yapmak) to reduce stress.

Always have breakfast (eat breakfast / kahvaltı yapmak) to keep your energy levels high—you never know when quick action will be needed.

Regularly take an exam (check / kontrol etmek) of your emergency supplies to ensure they are functional.

Even when you have nothing (be idle / hiçbir şey yapmamak), use that time to learn more about disaster safety.

Finally, let me see (allow me to check / görmeme izin verin): Do you have a bath kit (hygiene set / banyo ve temizlik malzemesi) in case water lines break?

Are you ready to make money (earn / para kazanmak) by educating others in your community?

With these steps, you’ll come to an end (finish / sona gelmek) of fear and go last (be the last / en sona kalmak) in the line of unprepared individuals.
